Avoid caffeine

How does caffeine impact sleep? Even a small amount of caffeine can affect how easy it is to sleep and stay asleep, as well as the quality of sleep. Experts often suggest avoiding caffeine after lunchtime as it can take a few hours to leave the system. Sometimes the sources of caffeine can be surprising. For example chocolate, cola and even cough medicine can contain levels of caffeine. Try avoiding them in the afternoon onwards if you want to improve sleep.

2. Establish good bedtime routines

Allowing our bodies to run to their own natural rhythms is key. This means that anything you can do to remind your system that daytime is for waking, and night time for sleeping is helpful! Experts say that bedtime routines can do wonders, whether it’s having a hot bath, reading a book or whatever helps you wind down and let your body know it’s time for sleep. Try switching off phones and screens an hour before bed and getting some exercise outdoors during the day. So make a routine you enjoy and try to stick to it.

3. Have a hot drink

A hot drink before bed has been a tradition for as long as we can remember. Research is divided on why this might be, but one theory is that the effect is the same as having a hot bath; the heat raises your body temperature, and it is the cooling down process which incites sleep, a time when you are naturally cooler. The time you take to make and drink the tea can also be a mindful winding down from the stresses of the day, the perfect way to start preparing for sleep and start your bed time routine.

4. End the day on a positive note

With life becoming increasingly hectic, having more and better sleep can help to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing as well as many other benefits such as strengthening the immune system. Sleep, or the lack of it, is also said to be a contributing factor for diabetes, heart health, and of course, mental health.
Having something delicious and sweet that you look forward to is a great way of ending the day with good feelings of contentment and satisfaction. Because, it is a natural compound, the amount of caffeine in each plant can vary enormously.

Coffee generally has the most milligrams of caffeine, but different types of tea, whether black or oolong tea, green or white tea, can contain varying levels depending on where it was grown and how it was picked and processed. Some black teas might even have more caffeine than some weaker coffees. Green tea generally has less than black teas, but again there might be quite a lot of overlap at the upper end of the green tea caffeine scale. This means that if you're drinking tea it can be very difficult to gauge exactly how much caffeine you are consuming in a day.

Decaffeinated tea vs Caffeine free tea

If you are trying to cut down on caffeine in tea, the best way is to substitute regular tea with either decaf tea or naturally caffeine free. But is there a difference? The answer is absolutely, yes.

Decaf tea means that the black or green tea leaves have undergone a decaffeination process to remove the caffeine molecules. Conversely, ‘caffeine free’ means the plant never actually contained caffeine in the first place; it was simply not in it’s genetic make-up. This means that the leaves undergo little processing and will not contain any trace caffeine. Naturally caffeine free would always be our preference when cutting down on caffeine.

How is tea decaffeinated?

There are different decaffeination methods that are used for tea, and it is worth asking which one was used if you are drinking decaf tea. All decaf teas are not the same! Here is an outline of the main techniques:

Methylene chloride

In this method, the tea leaves are soaked in a chemical solvent called methylene chloride which bonds with the caffeine molecules. The chemical is then separated out taking much of the caffeine with it. Unfortunately, it is not possible to remove all of it and so a chemical residue can be left on the leaves. This method is controversial as methylene chloride is widely considered not safe for consumption.

Ethyl acetate

Again the tea leaves are soaked, this time in ethyl acetate (also used in nail polish remover!). On the plus side, this is actually a chemical already present in tea leaves. On the negative side, again a chemical residue is left as the chemical can’t be entirely removed, and this leaves the tea with a bitter taste. It also destroys many of the health benefits, as it removes the ‘polyphenols’, special tea antioxidants which help fight free radicals and boost the body’s defence and renewal mechanisms.

Water processing

This is more closely associated with coffee decaffeination. The leaves are soaked in hot water, and then put through a carbon filter which extracts the caffeine molecules. The water is then added back to the leaves. Whilst considered relatively safe, much of the flavour is also removed and teas using this process can be weak and bland.

Carbon dioxide

Probably the most natural method of decaffeination. Tea leaves are mixed with liquid carbon dioxide with high pressure and temperature. At a certain point the carbon dioxide turns into a solvent and captures the caffeine molecules only. With this method, more of the beneficial compounds are left intact, and the flavour is better than the other methods, although it will never be as good as a normal black or green tea.

Are decaffeinated teas bad for you?

The downside of decaffeination is that if you are sensitive to caffeine and its side effects, you will still be consuming some caffeine. This is because it is virtually impossible to remove all the caffeine, often around 2.5% of the original caffeine content will remain. Additionally, most of the processes use some pretty potent chemical solvents, many of which can’t be entirely removed either. And finally, the extra processing can hugely effect the flavour and also the antioxidant health benefits of the tea, surely the reasons you wanted to drink tea in the first place!

Naturally caffeine free teas

Teas which are naturally caffeine free don’t undergo any chemical processing at all, making them a great option if you are cutting down on caffeine. In fact, the longer you leave your teabag to steep the more intense its malted nutty flavours, and the darker the colour. Plus, unlike other naturally caffeine free teas, you can drink it with milk. The big difference to black tea is that redbush is low in tannins and therefore is sweeter and won’t go bitter no matter how long you leave the teabag. We asked independent sleep therapist Christabel Majendie (BSc, MSc, MBPsS) to put a little science behind it all and give some recommendations on how to make your nights as restful and comfortable as possible.

Here is what she had to say:

The importance of a good night’s sleep

As one famous sleep researcher put it, “If sleep does not serve an absolutely vital function, then it is the biggest mistake the evolutionary process has ever made.”

The functions of sleep are still under investigation, however it appears to play many vital roles. Sleep may involve rebuilding of key cellular components needed for wakefulness and removal of cellular waste components. The state of wakefulness may be unsustainable so sleep is needed for replenishment and restoration. Sleep may be particularly important for detoxification of the brain. Recently, researchers found that the channels in the brain that remove waste products collected during the day actually widen when we sleep. There may be a link here with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Sleep also appears to play a vital role in memory consolidation and learning, both vital for survival. Other functions of sleep may be conservation of energy (beyond restful waking), the regulation of emotions, body temperature, the immune system and metabolism.

The effects of sleep deprivation

Even so, sleep is often not taken seriously, and viewed as an inconvenience we mask the signs of poor sleep with stimulants such as caffeine. But the importance of sleep becomes undeniable when we look at the effects of sleep deprivation. In the short term, lack of sleep impacts significantly on cognitive functions such as attention, alertness, concentration and problem solving. It also has a negative effect on memory and learning and can cause low mood and irritability the next day.

While these short term effects are reversible, in the long term the consequences are more alarming. Regular lack of sleep is linked to physical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and is associated with reduced life expectancy. In addition, chronic sleep deprivation increases your chances of having an accident and is also linked to mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

The benefits of reducing caffeine

Caffeine and sleep

Caffeine is so commonly consumed in our society that it is easy to forget it is a drug. Caffeine stimulates our nervous system, making us feel more alert and more awake. So it is no surprise that the desire for caffeine increases if we are tired and sleep deprived. The problem is that too much caffeine consumed during the day can affect sleep quality and quantity. This is because caffeine counteracts the effect of a natural ‘sleep factor’ called adenosine that builds up in the body throughout the day. This sleep factor plays a role in regulating how long we are awake. Caffeine before bedtime also reduces the amount of deep sleep we have, making us more likely to wake in the night.

Caffeine and health

Caffeine increases levels of Adrenaline in the bloodstream, a hormone that is released in the ‘fight or flight reaction,’ when we are stressed and need to get things done. A reliance on it may indicate that you are not getting enough sleep or good enough sleep. And if you are dependent on caffeine throughout the day to maintain alertness and concentration, it is likely that this will then impact on your subsequent sleep making the problem worse as a vicious cycle develops.

Heavy consumption of caffeine during the day may also lead to feeling over-stimulated in the evening and we may counteract this by unconsciously, self-medicating with sedatives such as alcohol or sleeping pills to wind us down and help us sleep. Clearly, this pattern of behaviour is not a healthy one.

Sources of Caffeine

Caffeine is not just found in coffee and tea. It is also found in energy drinks, coke and other fizzy drinks, chocolate products and even green tea. It is also found in several painkillers, diet pills and medications for colds.

Therefore, it is easy to see how your caffeine levels can add up throughout the day without you realizing. Some brands of decaffeinated coffee and tea have even been found to contain small amounts of caffeine.

The good news is that there are great alternatives to caffeinated drinks. Replace chocolate snacks with healthier alternatives. Milk or dairy products as a snack before bed may help as these contain a natural amino acid that promotes sleep. Or try a complex carbohydrate such as wholemeal toast or cereal. Vitamin B1 (found in nuts, beans, peas, wholegrain bread, fortified cereals) and magnesium (in nuts, wholegrain cereals, bananas, green leafy vegetables and milk) may also promote sleep.

Hunger causes wakefulness by releasing adrenaline so a light snack before bed can help sleep. And how is it different to 'normal' green tea?

Well, the answer is that green rooibos tea is made using the leaves of the rooibos or Apalathus Linearis plant, the same as is used to make red rooibos. However the difference lies in the way the tea is treated.
To make 'red' rooibos the leaves are picked, chopped and left to cure outside in the mountain air, slowly turning a deep red colour. This process is known as ‘oxidation’ and is the same process you will see occur when you take a bite from an apple. To make green rooibos, the leaves are picked and the oxidation process is stopped by the application of heat, and therefore they retain their light green colour. This technique is inspired by that used to make 'normal' green tea which is made from the Camellia Sinensis (as are all black teas). After harvesting, the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis are quickly dried to stop them oxidising and therefore darkening - the process that results in black teas.

The other key difference between green rooibos and 'normal' green tea is the caffeine levels. Green rooibos is naturally caffeine free because Aspalathus Linearis has no caffeine in its genetic make-up. Conversely, green teas are made from the Camellia Sinensis plant which does contain caffeine. Therefore, contrary to popular belief, green teas do have some caffeine, although the levels can vary.

What does green rooibos taste like?

Green rooibos is a deliciously light tea with a lovely mellow taste and a slight natural sweetness. Unlike many 'normal' green teas which can be a little bitter, green rooibos contains absolutely no bitterness or astringency due to the very low levels of tannins in the tea. As a result, no matter how long you leave your teabag in the cup, the tea will always remain delicate and light. Green rooibos makes a great refreshing and hydrating option to enjoy throughout the day, even at night time. Like 'normal' green tea, it should be enjoyed without milk to allow its delicate and distinctive taste to be enjoyed to the full.

Buy Green Rooibos tea

You can find our organic Tick Tock Green Rooibos tea in Tesco, Waitrose, Ocado, Sainsburys and you can also buy directly from the Tick Tock Tea website.

More Rooibos Tea Blog Posts

Is Rooibos Green Tea Caffeine Free?

Redbush Tea and Caffeine

What does Rooibos Tea taste like?

An Introduction to Vanilla Rooibos Tea

An introduction to Rooibos Vanilla Chai Tea

related:bounce-tea, related:organic-green-rooibos, related:original-rooibos-40-bags, related:rooibos-earl-grey, type:rooibos tea

As the founders of rooibos tea (Grandfather Benjamin Ginsberg first perfected the brew in 1903) and Britain’s favourite rooibos brand, we at Tick Tock have long been champions of this very special brew. Naturally caffeine free, low in tannins, rich in antioxidants and blessed with the unique aspalathin compound, rooibos is packed full of natural goodness. Found only in South Africa’s magnificent Cedarberg mountains north of Cape Town, rooibos is still harvested by hand and cured in the traditional way.

As “rooibos science” gathers steam, the growing body of research is starting to reveal a broad range of potential benefits – while the Food Unwrapped team highlighted the “reduction in fat accumulation” associated with frequent consumption, the UK’s Tea Advisory Panel draws attention to the tea’s traditional use “to relieve infant colic, allergies, asthma and dermatological problems.”

But there’s much more to rooibos than an impressive set of health credentials!
